I
was always interested in hair, ever since I was a girl of 13. You
see, my sister, who was 16 at the time, started to lose her hair. I
felt so bad for her and she couldn’t understand why it was
happening to her and not to any of her other sisters. I couldn’t
understand either.
I look back on that time now and realize no one really understood.
We still haven’t found the magic bullet but we have come a long
way in the understanding of hair loss. I have since learned that
hair is a direct barometer of what is going on inside our bodies.
Much of my learning came from the internet. I have to say I got some
good information and a lot of bad information. I finally hit upon a
site on the subject TRICHOLOGY, the study of hair and scalp
problems. I just knew I would have to take this course. But
Australia! What a long way away!
I wasn’t sure I would get the support and the guidance to complete
this 2-year course. |
So,
I did a bit of inquiring and the more I learned, the more I knew this was
right for me. I can tell you that I was thrilled with the help and quick responses to all my questions as they came up, and I had a lot of them!
When it came to doing the 100 clinical hours that are required, I did this training in Florida and it went smoothly. I was fortunate to have 2 mentors during that time. David Salinger, the director of the
IAT, was with me the whole time and David Kingsley of New York stayed with me for a small segment. They both gave me invaluable guidance and helped me improve my consultations.
Now, final exam time- I was nervous. Had I studied enough? Was I fully prepared to take this 3-hour exam? The day of the exam, I ploughed through and we sent the final exam to Australia for grading. After about a week or so I found out, via email, I'd passed!
I haven’t look back ---I have had some wonderful things happen to me since; I am doing some consulting with a few medical clinics to their male and female patients. I was hired to help in a FDA trial study for a piece of equipment that helps stop hair loss. I have recently been approached to train some of the staff at a hair replacement clinic.
I never knew how many doors this exciting career would open for me. My hard work paid off and I look forward to helping people by giving the best information for them. I am also fostering some wonderful relationships with caring physicians as well.
Thank you, IAT, for giving me the confidence to keep at it and encouragement me to make it happen.

I first heard of the International Association of Trichologists from the chairman of my company in 1997 or 1998. As I was practising as a hair care and hair replacement consultant, there was a need to have a recognised qualification.
I found the course to be very comprehensive and the clinical training to be precise, informative and interesting. I qualified in 1989 and have been practicing trichology since.
I have been given very good support by the IAT and would definitely recommend the IAT course to potential students.

Dr Apoorva
& Dr Sonal Shah I.A.T. from India

Both my wife, Dr Sonal, and I have had a passion for hair for the last 23 years. It all started in medical college in 1981 when one of our relatives was suffering severe hair loss and both Sonal and I started thinking furiously on developing treatments for hair.
Our inquisitiveness and passion for hair translated into the birth of Rich Feel, a brand exclusively devoted to hair and skin through clinics and products.
When we graduated in 1986 as medical doctors, we went to London for further training in hair and skin and, after intensive training for 6 months, we returned to India to establish our own practice in the field of skin and hair care.
|
However, we were still not happy with the knowledge we possessed in hair care.
In our quest to constantly upgrade our knowledge, we went to Singapore to learn about hair-weaving. It was here that we first came to know about the International Association of Trichologists (IAT). We were terribly excited and, on returning to India, I contacted the IAT. From that time, it has been one fruitful and fulfilling journey into trichology.
I immediately decided to fly to Sydney, Australia to complete my training in trichology with the IAT. Although I was a medical practitioner, this training was truly eye-opening. I remember that the day before I was to sit my final exam in Sydney, my instructor insisted on taking me on a sightseeing tour of Sydney. There I was, with an exam looming, and my teacher insisted on showing me around !! I have to be frank - my thoughts were on my exam the next day, with a lot of apprehension.
A month later, during Christmas, I received an email and fax that I had become the first Certified Trichologist in India for the IAT.
Life took a big turn and being India's first Certified Trichologist brought in a lot of fame and name. I owe all my success and fame to the training I received from the IAT. I decided to establish and launch an Indian chapter of IAT and this was done on September 3rd, 1999 at the Oberoi. David Salinger, the president of the IAT, attended the ceremony and the event was covered by all the media.
It was now time for my wife, Sonal, to go to Australia for her training. She passed the exam with flying colours and became India's first Certified Woman Trichologist.
Over the past four years we have been tricho-consultants to Proctor and Gamble, Marico and Bajaj, in addition to running our own trichology clinics. We were also appointed as official Hair Care Experts to Femina Miss India. For our work in trichology, we won the prestigious Maharsahtra Vaibhav Award.
Truly, our association with the IAT and trichology has proven to be a turning point in our lives.
